HEALTH
AND ENVIRONMENT 10. ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES
(WATER, SANITATION AND TREE PLANTING)
We will assist in providing household rain catchments, water jars,
and water tanks. Households which have had their latrines destroyed
will be provided with new ones.
Replanting the mangroves
Some villagers are being forced to buy clean drinking water at Baht
90 per cubic liter, which is 30 times higher than the pre-tsunami
price. We will provide reverse-osmosis water dispensers for the communities;
the proceeds of the water purifiers will then be used for income generation.
Trees and mangroves will be planted to replace those destroyed; for every tree planted, 40 Baht will go into the village
and community banks.

To help reduce the depletion of natural fish stocks in the area, communities
will be encouraged to establish hatcheries; these fingerlings will
be used as feeder-fish for the more expensive, farm-raised fish such
as the plaa gow, which eats significantly more than traditional farm-raised
fish. Using hatchery-raised feeder-fish will significantly reduce
the burden on local stocks of fingerlings, and will allow the farmers
to raise higher-value fish.
Communities will also be encouraged to plant jatropha trees, which
bear nuts that, when pressed/milled, dispense a biodiesel liquid –
ready for use in the fishermen’s boat engines without any further
processing.
The ground-up nut-meal can then be used as an organic fertilizer.
One hectare of the plant can produce two to four tons of bio-diesel
each year, bearing fruit as early as year two and living for fifty
years; this will not only meet the needs of the local fishermen, but
also generate sustainable income for the community for decades to
come.
We witnessed several communities that were saved from the tsunami
by the lush mangrove forests, which absorbed the main force of the
wave, thereby lessening the damage to the village houses. We believe
that community mangrove cultivation and preservation will help minimize
damage if there is another tsunami in the future.
